COP26 Side Event: Carbon Neutrality and the SDGs

On 4 November, the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) will co-host the event: "Carbon Neutrality and the SDGs". This side event of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) will engage leading experts to discuss challenges and good practices for achieving both carbon neutrality by 2050 and the 2030 Agenda. It will facilitate discussion about the role of education and capacity building in the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The event will be held at the Japan Pavilion at COP26 in Glasgow, UK, and online.

Background

To avoid the climate crisis by limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, many countries have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by the middle of this century. Carbon neutrality requires a transformation of economic and social systems and commitment across society to drastic action by all sectors and actors. In this context, action towards carbon neutrality requires better understanding of social challenges such as declining regional economies, widening disparities, ageing populations, and mechanisms to address these challenges.

Participation

This event will be held on Thursday 4 November 2021, 17:00–18:30 (UTC+0) at the COP26 Japan Pavilion in Glasgow, UK (5 November 02:00–03:30 JST).

It will also be online on Zoom (registration not required).

This event will be held in English only.
