As part of the Write. Review. Publish. Webinar Series on Academic Publishing, the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV) is organizing the tenth webinar, centred on the challenges faced by young researchers and possible actions to tackle them.
The session will take place on November 3rd, at 11h00 (Lisbon Time | UTC+0). The guest is Elsa Estevez, Director of the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering, at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS).
Seminar Overview
Digital government research is a domain with distinctive features. It draws on contributions from many disciplines, including public administration, computer science, data science, social sciences, law, and others. Digital tools, as main enablers of digital government solutions, change rapidly, and solutions in the digital world are being scrutinized through an increasing number of lenses, including ethics and human rights. Given these complexities, competencies for contributing to digital government research require a balanced combination of depth and breadth across topics.
Thus, young researchers in the area face several unique challenges, such as contributing to an interdisciplinary domain in many cases lacking comprehensive and specific training; bridging gaps between academic research and practical implementation in government; ensuring access to government data, which is often inaccessible and siloed; dealing with rapid technological change and emerging technologies; ensuring funding for emerging topics at the time of restrictions in the use of public funds; and finding venues for publishing.
In this talk, we will address challenges faced by young researchers and possible actions to tackle them, aiming to facilitate the process towards meaningful theoretical and practical impact of their work, and contributing to nurturing the community of future domain experts in digital government research.
