About the event

As the editors of Global Governance: A Review of Multilateralism and International Organisations, we are pleased to invite prospective authors, scholars, and practitioners to participate in a dedicated information session combined with a featured book presentation.

This dual-format event is designed to both introduce the journal and foster closer engagement between editors and the scholarly community. The session will provide detailed insights into the journal’s scope, editorial policies, and publishing standards, while offering practical guidance on how to successfully publish in Global Governance. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with the editorial team through an open Q&A.

In addition, the event will feature a keynote presentation by Inken von Borzyskowski, Editor-in-Chief of Global Governance, who will present her recent book Exit from International Organizations (2025), co-authored with Felicity Vabulas.

Exit from International Organizations: Rethinking State Withdrawal

State exit from international organizations appears to have become more prevalent in recent years, with some observers arguing that such withdrawals may even be increasing. The United Kingdom voluntarily withdrew from the European Union in 2016/2020. The United States withdrew from UNESCO and WHO, and recently announced plans to leave dozens of other international institutions. States have also been suspended from international organizations for violating underlying commitments, such as Russia invading Ukraine and subsequently being excluded from the Council of Europe, the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the World Tourism Organization. Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have also been suspended from the Economic Community of West African States following coups d’etat.

Observers attribute these events to nationalism, populism, backlash against powerful international organizations, and globalization more broadly. This talk will correct this conventional wisdom and place recent events in historical context. Drawing on her recent book Exit from International Organizations and its 488 cases of State exit from international organizations since 1914, Professor von Borzyskowski will argue that exits have not increased in recent years, that most exits are temporary instead of terminal, and that they are rarely driven by nationalism, populism or backlash against authoritative institutions. Instead, the evidence in Exit from International Organizations suggests that states usually use exit as an attempt to negotiate institutional and policy change.
