United Nations University is proud to endorse the Hamburg Declaration on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the SDGs, an instrumental document launched at this month’s Hamburg Sustainability Conference, which aims to orient AI with global sustainable development goals.
The development of the Declaration was supported by a team of researchers at UNU-CPR, led by Dr. Eleonore Fournier-Tombs, Head of Anticipatory Action and Innovation, with input from Dr. Nicole Goldin, Head of Equitable Development, and contributions from the many AI specialists throughout the UNU system.
The Declaration calls for collective action and offers a human-centred, rights-based approach to AI development and governance to seize the opportunities this rapidly evolving technology offers while minimizing its risks.
It is framed upon the five pillars of the 2030 Agenda:
People: Promote and protect human rights, gender equality, digital inclusion and safety, especially for marginalized groups.
Planet: Ensure sustainable AI stewardship through green technologies and align with climate action and environmental protection goals.
Prosperity: Foster inclusive economic growth by supporting local innovation, skills development, data ecosystems and equitable access to AI infrastructure.
Peace: Safeguard information integrity to build public trust and prevent the misuse of AI for disinformation, social division or online harm.
Partnerships: Encourage multistakeholder collaboration, open data, interdisciplinary learning and research, and AI as a global public good to address shared challenges.
