On 19 October 2023, the UNU-WIDER Seminar Series presents Educational Mobility in Europe and Central Asia with Ivan Torre, Senior Economist at the World Bank Office of the Chief Economist for Europe and Central Asia. This event will held be onsite at UNU-WIDER and via Zoom webinar.
Intergenerational mobility in education is important to reduce talent misallocation in societies. This event will be centred around a paper that provides estimates of the oriented mobility measures developed by Foster and Rothbaum, which overcome limitations faced by more commonly used indicators. It applies the measures to different rounds of the Life in Transition Survey (2010, 2016, and 2022-23), covering more than 40 countries in Europe, Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa. The paper discusses how intergenerational education mobility has been decreasing across generations except for the Middle East and North Africa, where it has increased for the youngest generations. These findings point to the limits many countries may find when transition to an innovation-led growth, for which the countries need to make the best use of their population’s talent.

About the series
The WIDER Seminar Series showcases the latest research on key topics in development economics. It provides a forum for senior and early-career researchers, both in-house and external, to present recent and ongoing work related to UNU-WIDER’s current work programme.
In addition to providing a forum for both academic debate and training, the series presents an opportunity for policy makers and others interested in development to learn about the latest research methods and findings.
The WIDER Seminar Series events take place on Wednesdays. All those interested are invited to register and attend via Zoom or in person.
