Since September 2019, Maximilian has been a PhD Fellow at UNU-MERIT. His research is on the diffusion of inclusive innovations in low-income environments.
In his research, he uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies (content analysis, qualitative comparative analysis, structural equation modelling), to cover the entire "innovation journey", incorporating supply- and demand-side analyses, as well as assessing innovations' effect on corporate profitability and positive impact for beneficiaries (economic, social, and ecological). Conceptually, Maximilian applies systems-thinking and employs a neo-Schumpeterian approach to economics.
In addition to his academic expertise, Maximilian posesses extensive experience managing projects with both research and implementation focus. He has led multiple projects, including in developing country contexts. These projects involved working with multinational corporations, the United Nations, and high-level policymakers, with scopes including innovation in humanitarian contexts, sustainable business models, and financing for innovation.
Previously, he worked at a business and management consultancy in Frankfurt, Germany. In his role as a business consultant, Maximilian participated in and co-led a number of projects in the areas of innovation and process optimization, sustainable finance, investment solutions, and anti-financial crime in German development banks and other financial services providers.
Maximilian holds a Masters in Economics, with a specialization in social economics, from Maastricht University and a double-degree Bachelor of Science from EBS University and the IESEG School of Management.
