Dr. Kerry Black is an interdisciplinary water researcher and engineer with expertise in sustainable water systems, community‑centred water sustainability, and Indigenous‑led water governance.
She serves as the Executive Co-Director of the UNU Hub on Empowering Communities to Adapt to Environmental Change at the University of Calgary, where she co-leads the coordination of Hub activities and advances research on environmental prediction to address emerging water security threats. Through the Hub, Dr. Black champions transdisciplinary research and policy initiatives on sustainable water management and the inclusion of Indigenous and community knowledge into global water governance and decision‑making. She is also the UNESCO Co‑Chairholder in Mountain Water Sustainability.
Dr. Black is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, where she has led the development of a university‑wide water institute. Dr. Black’s work spans academic research, policy engagement, and applied partnerships with Indigenous communities in Canada and internationally, with training in engineering and water resources that bridges technical and social dimensions of water sustainability.
