Professor Gary Lewis' work focuses on environmental security, the complex interlinkages between climate change, nature loss and human security with a focus on the role of ecological diplomacy in fostering sustainable peace.  

As a Professor of Practice in Human and Environmental Security at UNU-INWEH, he supports the institute’s knowledge dissemination, capacity-building efforts, and research initiatives on environmental security.

A native of Barbados, Professor Lewis has served the UN for over three decades based in various duty stations around the world, including Afghanistan, Austria, Barbados, India, Iran, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, Switzerland and Thailand. Most recently, he served as UNEP's Director for Disasters and Conflict in Geneva and Director of Policy and Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to joining UNEP, he was the UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iran, after holding successive directorships at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
