On 23 August 2024, UNU-IAS hosted the third annual International Youth Day Webinar titled "Youth at the Digital Forefront and Sustainability”. The event highlighted the potential of youth in leveraging digital innovations to advance sustainable development and ensuring that rapidly evolving technologies adhere to sustainability principles. Bringing together a diverse group of youth sustainability leaders, the webinar explored opportunities and challenges posed by digitalization, emphasizing how innovative technologies were being harnessed to meet the SDGs.
In a keynote speech, Neeruja Gupta (Assistant Programme Manager, Safetipin) discussed the importance of participatory data collection for women and marginalized groups, emphasizing how youth can play a pivotal role in this area. Tori Morris (Project Manager, SOS-UK) highlighted the significance of green skills and green jobs for youth, which are essential for a sustainable future. Piriyapol Prasankliew (President, KMITL Startup Hub) explored digital innovations for environment and youth leadership, showcasing how young leaders are leveraging technology to address environmental challenges. Jerome Silla (Research Associate, UNU-IAS) presented on digital tools for tracking and reducing carbon footprint, demonstrating the potential of these technologies in driving sustainable practices. Breakout sessions engaged participants in further discussions on environmental solutions and shared personal experiences and insights.
The webinar was designed and implemented by the International Youth Day Organizing Committee comprised of youth leaders from around the globe, highlighting the commitment to elevating youth voices and empowering the next generation of sustainability leaders.
