On 4–8 November 2024, a UNU-IAS workshop bolstered the climate change mitigation capacity of the Viet Nam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE). Held in Seoul in collaboration with the Korea Environment Corporation (K-eco), it developed knowledge and skills needed for the effective implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), ultimately advancing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The workshop emphasized the integration of equity and climate justice into climate action, highlighting practical tools and strategies to strengthen national climate commitments. Workshop discussions highlighted potential solutions through a circular economy approach as well as the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).
Officials from MoNRE participated along with representatives from K-eco, with sessions facilitated by Anupam Khajuria (Research Fellow and Academic Associate, UNU-IAS), Nafissa Insebayeva (Consultant, UNU-IAS), and Madhavi Pundit (Senior Economist, Asian Development Bank).
Key outcomes of the workshop included enhanced understanding among MoNRE officials on advancing national GHG reduction efforts through a whole-society approach. Participants engaged in reflective sessions that fostered interactive discussions, focusing on improving their forthcoming NDC submissions with a strong emphasis on developing equitable, inclusive and impactful climate policies.
