ESD Networks Featured in University World News

Article on rediscovering education for sustainability features the Global RCE Network and ProSPER.Net.

On 2 December 2023, University World News published an article focusing on Education for Sustainable Development. The article explores the concept of “communiversity” implemented by the International Islamic University Malaysia, the host of RCE Greater Gombak, a member of the UNU-IAS initiative Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs). The “communiversity” concept conveys the idea of coexistence and co-creation of knowledge between a university and its surrounding community.

The article introduces the Global RCE Network as an important global platform for ESD. The piece also highlights the 13th Global RCE Conference, held from 31 October to 2 November 2023 in Malaysia, an event during which the “communiversity” concept gained attention. In addition, the article discusses how Professor Dzulkifli Razak, Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia, worked with UNU to create an alternative university appraisal system under the governance of ProSPER.Net, an alliance of leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region that are committed to integrating sustainable development into postgraduate courses and curricula.

Excerpt:

The evolving communiversity idea is debated within the Global RCE Network, which provides a platform for ideas and brings together regional centres of expertise (RCEs) that facilitate education for sustainable development. There are some 190 RCEs globally, and International Islamic University Malaysia hosts one.
