Background

2015 marked a milestone year in global environmental governance as two key agreements were adopted: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Since then, several research initiatives aimed to understand the interlinkages between decarbonisation and carbon neutrality initiatives and efforts to achieve the SDGs. The results of these research activities indicated that the interlinkages could have both positive and negative implications for the SDGs. It is essential for policymakers to gain a better understanding of these linkages at all levels.
