ABOUT THE EVENT

What's it about?

As 2020 draws to a close and we take stock of all that has transpired in the wake of COVID-19, opportunities for reflection and shared learning emerge. Drawing on the evidence amassed over years of tackling GBV, this webinar brings together experts to discuss the transferable lessons from the field of GBV which can be applied to the human resources for health space.

Who is part of it?

The session was moderated by Professor Asha George from University of the Western Cape, with the participation of Dr Avni Amin from WHO; and Professor Fely-Marilyn Lorenzo from Nursing education at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as guest speakers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. The impact of COVID-19 on GBV

The session explored questions around the frightening increase in GBV in 2020, as many were confined to their homes, jobs were lost, and lives and livelihoods were severely disrupted. The speakers also discussed and answer questions about how the increase in violence has not been limited to private spaces and how attacks on healthcare workers, the majority of which are female, were also widely reported.

  2. We must take action to end GBV

The speakers reflected upon how now more than ever, after analysing a year of increased GBV, the call and actions required to eliminate all forms of GBV take on a new level of urgency.
