This project aims to advance the Resource Nexus by connecting the global geospatial data science community to research challenges related to the integrated management of environmental resources. This is relevant for the reasons stated below.

Firstly, for an integrated management of environmental resources, geospatial data and information are essential for understanding phenomena across spatial scales and time periods. Despite much progress, there are still many challenges with making ever-increasing volumes of geospatial information about environmental resources available, accessible and usable.

Secondly, very often, resources and data about them are managed by different organizations with varied mandates and areas of jurisdiction, presenting challenges in data management and governance, as well as integrated assessment and data analytics of environmental sources due to the heterogeneity in data models, scales and formats. The challenges of geospatial data governance and management representing environmental resources are closely related to and can impact the governance and management of the environmental resources.

Thirdly, for human users the ever-increasing volumes of geospatial information can be overwhelming, therefore cartography and geovisualization related to making geospatial information usable and understandable are relevant. Understanding and improving maps and (geo)visualizations that communicate the complex interdependencies and interconnectedness of resources in space and over time is essential for communication around the Resource Nexus.
