Filippo Marinoni is a Visiting Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS.
During his visiting research fellowship at UNU-CRIS, Filippo Marinoni will primarily work on the regionalisation of the EU at its external borders, with a focus on the so-called "Western Balkan region", under the supervision of Frank Mattheis within the Re-LAB Cluster. Filippo's PhD is in Global Studies and the general topic is the EU enlargement policy.
Prior to starting his doctoral research, Filippo obtained academic degrees in Law, Human Geography, and Migration Studies, developing an interdisciplinary profile at the intersection of international law, mobility, and regional studies. In his research, Filippo adopts a global and constructivist perspective, and its areas of expertise are the Mediterranean region, the Arab world, and the Balkans.
His work explores regional integration, migration governance, and the political construction of borders and regions in international affairs. He has conducted research on migration and international legal frameworks, including work on the Italy-Albania agreement on migrants and its broader implications for European migration governance. At UNU-CRIS, he will focus on the relationship between the European Union and the so-called “Western Balkans” as a politically constructed and evolving regional space.
Alongside his academic research, Filippo has gained experience in several research institutions and policy-oriented environments, including the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). He also collaborates with the Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale (CeSPI), contributing policy-oriented analyses and articles on public opinion, regional cooperation, and European affairs.
