Self-Care as a Path to Financing Universal Health and Equitable Development

Exploring how self-care can advance universal health coverage and help address growing financing pressures facing health systems.

Time
- America/New York

During UN General Assembly High-Level Week, UNU-CPR will convene policymakers, practitioners and experts to discuss the role of self-care in advancing universal health coverage (UHC) and strengthening health systems amid growing financing pressures.

Health systems are under increasing strain, particularly in the Global South, where governments face declining foreign aid, reduced trade and investment, and rising debt burdens. Against this backdrop, greater cost-effectiveness and innovative approaches to health financing are increasingly important.

Growing evidence suggests that self-care can improve health outcomes while reducing costs for individuals, health providers and governments, with existing estimates pointing to as much as $119 billion in potential savings. The discussion will consider how governments can integrate self-care into UHC and development financing strategies, the policy and financing levers needed to support implementation, and the evidence required to inform country-level approaches.

The event will also launch three companion policy papers on Self-Care Pathways to UHC and Financing Development, including deep dives into the financial and wellbeing returns from self-care in cardiovascular and maternal health.
