On 13 August 2024, UNU will host “Navigating Economic Cooperation: Reflections on 80 Years Since Bretton Woods”, a conversation with Marc Uzan, Executive Director and founder of the Reinventing Bretton Woods Committee. This event will start at 18:30 in the 2F Reception Hall at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.

The Bretton Woods Conference of 1944 brought together representatives from 44 nations to establish a framework for international economic cooperation in the wake of World War II. This conference laid the groundwork for today’s global financial architecture, including the establishment of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

In 1994, to mark the 50th anniversary of Bretton Woods, Marc Uzan organized the inaugural “Reinventing Bretton Woods” conference. This event addressed the need for the global economy to adapt to new actors and circumstances that had emerged since the original conference. It also led to the creation of the Reinventing Bretton Woods Committee, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering dialogue among high-level stakeholders to redefine the global financial architecture and monetary system.

Today, 80 years after Bretton Woods, economic cooperation continues to evolve in response to contemporary challenges. Is the international financial architecture of 1944 still equipped to address the challenges of today?

Marc Uzan will join UNU Head of Communications Kiki Bowman for an in-depth discussion on issues of economic fragmentation, macroeconomic policy challenges, and innovations in global governance.

The UNU Conversation Series aims to foster audience participation; you are encouraged to engage with the speakers during the conversation and at the reception that will follow, where all event attendees are invited to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks while exchanging ideas and making new contacts.

Please note that this event will be in English. Advance registration (by 12 August at 15:00) is required. Please click on the REGISTER button above to access the online registration page.

Please be prepared to present identification at check-in.
