Request for Research Proposals: Economic Transformation, and Social Protection & Taxation

UNU-WIDER invited research proposals on topics of economic transformation and topics of social protection & taxation in developing countries.

Economic Transformation Database

UNU-WIDER is seeking proposals for original research on the Economic Transformation Database (ETD) project, which aims to better understand structural transformation — how it varies, why it varies, and what the implications of this might be — and to offer new frameworks that provide insight into how to address it. The aim is to generate new knowledge on how developing economies can achieve sustainable, inclusive development.

Proposals for original research that speak to the core themes of this project and offer strong empirical, methodological, or theoretical contributions will be considered. UNU-WIDER will commission papers from researchers working in growth and economic development and related fields. As part of the project, researchers will be asked to participate in an online workshop tentatively scheduled for November 2022.

Proposals will be selected on the basis of relevance to the research project; strength of theoretical, methodological, or empirical contribution; and clarity of writing.

Proposals from individuals (or groups of individuals) as well as non-profit organizations are welcome. The submission deadline is 31 January 2022. For more information, see the  Request for research proposals on the UNU-WIDER website.

Social Protection and Taxation

UNU-WIDER is seeking proposals for original research on social protection and taxation in times of crises in developing countries — specifically research that promotes better understanding about proper crisis response, and the way social protection and tax systems can be made more sustainable.

UNU-WIDER invites proposals from qualified researchers for papers examining relevant topics. Papers may use either theoretical or empirical approaches, with a focus on policies affecting households. Those papers that pass initial screening will be considered for publication under UNU-WIDER copyright in the WIDER Working Paper Series. Papers further selected by the UNU-WIDER editorial team will be included in a book proposal for an edited volume with a world-class academic publisher.

Proposals from individuals (or groups of individuals) as well as non-profit organizations are welcome. The submission deadline is 31 January 2022. For more information, see the Request for research proposals on the UNU-WIDER website.
