Preparing for the Future: Former State Minister Strengthens UNU Resource Nexus Capacity in Scenario Planning Extreme

Intensive workshop equips participants with practical foresight processes and tools to navigate the uncertainty of extreme future scenarios.

In an era marked by rapid change, growing complexity, and increasing uncertainty, organisations must be equipped not only to respond to emerging challenges but also to anticipate them. To strengthen the capacity of its team in facilitation and foresight, UNU Resource Nexus recently hosted a two-day Scenario Planning Extreme Training of Trainers, facilitated by Dr. Martin Gillo, former Saxon State Minister for Economic Affairs and Labour.

Drawing on his extensive experience across government, business, and other sectors, Dr. Gillo guided participants through a structured 10-step methodology for exploring extreme future scenarios that are often overlooked in conventional planning processes. Scenario Planning Extreme goes a significant step further by deliberately considering the possibility of extreme futures, including "black swans" - sudden and dramatic changes that are often dismissed as unlikely, yet can lead to catastrophically flawed decisions when ignored.

The approach encourages participants to think beyond immediate challenges and consider a broader range of possible futures. The training was based on Dr. Gillo's book, If You Aren't Going Too Far, You're Not Going Far Enough!

Prof. Serena Coetzee, Head of Education and Capacity Development at UNU Resource Nexus, highlighted the value of the training:

"We are privileged to benefit from Dr. Gillo's expertise and extensive experience spanning government, the private sector, and strategic leadership. His training challenges participants to co-design strategies for dealing with extreme future scenarios, effectively taking the fear out of an uncertain future. The training equips participants with practical tools that can be applied across many areas of work."

The workshop underscored the importance of future-oriented thinking at a time when environmental, technological, economic, and societal changes are reshaping communities and institutions worldwide. By examining multiple plausible scenarios, participants explored how organisations can become more resilient, adaptive, and responsive in the face of uncertainty.

Reflecting on the training, Thato Masire, Communications and Advocacy Lead at UNU Resource Nexus, noted:

"Scenario Planning Extreme encourages participants to think beyond immediate priorities and consider a broader range of future possibilities. It is a powerful tool and process that can support policymakers, decision-makers, institutions, and stakeholders in making informed decisions under uncertainty."

The highly interactive programme combined preparatory reading, facilitated discussions, visual mapping exercises, group work, and reflection sessions. Beyond learning the methodology, participants also strengthened their facilitation skills, enabling them to lead similar foresight exercises within their own teams and networks.

As organisations operate in increasingly complex and rapidly evolving environments, tools such as Scenario Planning Extreme can help transform uncertainty into informed action, supporting more strategic and resilient decision-making. As Dr. Gillo notes:

"This approach also teaches us to continually think about possible changes that could result from new trends in our daily lives. Being flexible about possible future developments frees us from clinging to old habits, which may no longer be adequate for the future demands of our world."
