The UNU-MERIT Internal Conference 2024, held on 26-27 September, was a dynamic two-day event that brought together researchers from across the institute to present their work and engage in meaningful dialogue. With over 50 presentations and a variety of thematic sessions, the conference showcased the diverse research expertise within the UNU-MERIT community, providing a platform for intellectual exchange, networking, and collaboration.
The Internal Conference was organized by Dr. Micheline Goedhuys, UNU-MERIT's PhD director, in collaboration with the PhD programme coordinator Soha Youssef. Dr. Goedhuys plays a key role in shaping this annual event, ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive programme of thematic sessions that reflects the diverse research expertise within the UNU-MERIT community.
Keynote Speakers
The event was highlighted by two insightful keynote addresses:
Prof. Dr. Daniele Archibugi from Birkberk, University of London delivered a presentation on 'New Generation Innovation Studies,' exploring the evolving landscape of innovation and its impact on global systems.
Prof. Dr. Joost de Laat from Utrecht University presented 'Early Childhood Development and Inequality,' emphasizing the critical role of early interventions in addressing societal inequalities.
Research Themes
The presentations were organized into three key thematic areas:
1. The Economics of Innovation
This track covered topics such as technological change, the economics of knowledge, structural shifts, and innovation-driven economic development. Presenters explored how advancements in new technologies drive growth and transformation across sectors.
2. Public Policy and Governance
Presentations in this area focused on governance, institutions, migration, development, and labor economics. The sessions delved into the role of policy in tackling issues like poverty, social protection, and inequality, while exploring solutions for global governance challenges.
3. Societal Transformations
Researchers examined how innovation and entrepreneurship can foster sustainable transitions. Topics included sustainable innovation, system transitions, and innovation targeting the 'base of the pyramid,' with a focus on addressing global development needs and ensuring inclusivity.
A Collaborative and Diverse Community
The UNU-MERIT Internal Conference is one of the few opportunities where researchers at different stages of their academic journeys come together. Participants included dual-career PhD fellows, who typically attend in-person events twice a year, alongside full-time PhD fellows and senior researchers. For dual-career fellows, this event is a particularly significant opportunity to present their work and engage in person with colleagues, as they manage their academic careers alongside professional commitments. The conference also provided a unique platform where first-year PhD fellows and higher-year fellows alike could exchange ideas and benefit from one another's expertise, creating a rich collaborative environment.
Although in-person interactions have been a regular feature for dual-career fellows over the past three years, the broader in-person event allowed all participants to benefit from face-to-face discussions, networking, and informal conversations. These interactions, often during breaks or shared meals, offered valuable opportunities to build professional connections and explore potential collaborations.
We are incredibly proud of this vibrant community and deeply honored to work alongside such committed and talented individuals. As an institution, UNU-MERIT remains committed to supporting our PhD fellows, helping them grow not only in their research but also in their personal and professional development. This event reflects our ongoing dedication to fostering an environment where feedback, collaboration, and reflection propel us forward.
The UNU-MERIT Internal Conference 2024 was more than an academic event; it was a celebration of our collective progress and a reminder of the strength of our community. We look forward to building on these accomplishments and continuing to support our PhD fellows on their journey toward future success.
