Mohamed Ag Alhousseini is an adviser at UNDP - DPPA Joint Programme on Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention, as Peace and Development Advisor (PDA) and a dual-career PhD fellow at UNU-MERIT and Maastricht University.

Mohamed’s research interests include understanding the interplay of local power dynamics and statehood in conflict-prone territories; and shifts in governance during war to peace transition. His PhD research is focused on understanding the influence of local elite networks on sustainability of peace in northern Mali.

Mohamed holds a MA in Development Studies - Governance and Public Management from the International University of the Francophonie (Université Senghor) in Alexandria, and a post-graduate Certificate in International Relations and Conflict Analysis from the Catholic University of Leuven.  

He is currently working in Haiti for the UNDP - DPPA Joint Programme on Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention, as Peace and Development Advisor (PDA). He previously served in the same position in Mauritania. Prior to his peace advisory positions at the United Nations (UN), Mohamed served the UN Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) as Political Affairs Officer focusing on regional security trends and non-state armed actors. He also worked for the UN’s peacekeeping missions in Central African Republic and Mali as Civil Affairs Officer. In addition to his UN experiences, Mohamed worked for the International Crisis Group (ICG) as Northern Sahel Analyst, and for the US Institute of Peace (USIP) as Consultant on the Justice and Security Dialogue programme for the Sahel and Maghreb.  

Mohamed’s PhD thesis is supervised by Prof. Adam Fagan, political scientist at King’s College London; Dr. Yvan Guichaoua, Senior Lecturer in International Conflict Analysis at University of Kent; and Dr Nora Ragab, Researcher at Maastricht Graduate School of Governance / UNU-MERIT.
