UNU–CCNY Master's in Earth System Science & Environmental Engineering

CCNY

This master's programme is delivered by UNU-INWEH in collaboration with  the City College of New York (CCNY) at UNU Hub on Remote Sensing and Sustainable Innovations for Resilient Urban Systems (R-SIRUS), pairing a CCNY Master's degree with a UNU-certified diploma.

The M.S. in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering (ESEE) at CCNY's Grove School of Engineering brings together engineering, earth science and environmental policy to tackle water security, climate adaptation and sustainable development. Through the UNU Hub on Remote Sensing and Sustainable Innovations for Resilient Urban Systems (R-SIRUS) at CCNY, ESEE students can also earn a UNU-certified Diploma in Environmental Modelling and Decision-Making from UNU-INWEH, with coursework counting towards both credentials.

The programme suits graduates from engineering and the sciences, including physics, applied mathematics and chemistry, who want to combine technical skills with a global, policy-facing perspective. Graduates receive a Master of Science in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering from CCNY and a UNU-certified Diploma in Environmental Modelling and Decision-Making from UNU-INWEH, an internationally recognised pairing for careers in environmental policy, governance and applied research. Students must first be admitted to the ESEE programme at CCNY before applying for the UNU diploma option.

About the R-SIRUS Hub

Launched in 2024 at CCNY's Grove School of Engineering, R-SIRUS is the first UNU Hub in the United States and is focused on remote sensing for resilient urban systems. It works across three pillars — Research and Development; Education, Training and Capacity Building; and Policy, Advocacy and Outreach — and its research spans three clusters: earth monitoring and remote sensing of urban systems, climate change impacts on health in underserved urban communities, and energy innovations for sustainable urban environments. The first graduating cohort of the joint programme completed the MS and the UNU diploma in 2026.
