The AFTER Carbon Agenda: UNU-INRA at COP16 Riyadh

Dr. Fatima Denton, Director of UNU-INRA discusses the genesis and importance of the AFTER Carbon Project.

COP29Baku is over but the battle to equip Africa for a post carbon world is not.

At COP16Riyadh, the UNU-INRA team will be representing the organisation at side events and an exhibition stand where the team's research on the natural resource management, climate action nexus will be exhibited.

We stand at a crossroads of remaining in the status quo or taking transformational action that changes the trajectory of the global transition to a lower carbon development.

To understand the complex interdependencies between land, climate, biodiversity and water, among other Earth system components, science based evidence can be used to offer policymakers a focused lens that highlights potential risks and rewards of different natural resource management decisions as well as opportunities for effective climate action.

By providing reliable data and insights, science can be used as an essential guide for policymakers and other actors to make informed decisions, prioritise investments in key areas and design more targeted interventions.

UNU-INRA's AFTER Carbon initiative epitomises the importance of research- to -action initiatives. AFTER Carbon is a policy-to-research hub bringing together key players including  a range of scientists, private sector entrepreneurs, policy makers and civil society groups-within a transdisciplinary research program.

With this collaboration of experts with the requisite skills, experience and vision to help fight climate change, AFTER Carbon is set to analyse the most dire issues in the continent's priority sectors including but not limited to land, agriculture, energy and cities.

The vision of AFTER Carbon is to provide a range of solutions required to help the African continent thrive in a post carbon economy. It identifies the structural limitations that exist and hinder the continent's journey towards a low carbon development and identifies the best fit solutions to address these issues.

AFTER Carbon is a proactive initiative. It is to equip the African continent with crucial knowledge needed to effectively transition and thrive in a post carbon economy.
