Leveraging Higher Education Networks for Sustainability

The Asahi Shimbun SDGs ACTION website featured comments by a UNU-IAS Visiting Expert on the role of higher education in addressing global issues.

On 1 October 2024, the Asahi Shimbun SDGs ACTION website published an article on the 2024 Higher Education Sustainability Initiative Global Forum, a side event of the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2024 (HLPF). Focusing on a multi-stakeholder discussion on the importance of higher education and using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help achieve the SDGs, the article highlighted the need for higher education action groups to embrace AI.

The article included comments by Miki Sugimura (Professor, Sophia University; Visiting Professor, UNU-IAS), who emphasized the transformative role of higher education in addressing global challenges. Prof. Sugimura has been advocating for a competency-based approach that incorporates interdisciplinary studies, focusing on sustainable development and global citizenship. She stressed the importance of utilizing international higher education networks to facilitate collaboration on sustainability education and research, particularly the Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network (ProSPER.Net), an alliance of leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region, for which UNU-IAS serves as the secretariat.
