The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) aims to enhance the role of the higher education sector in advancing sustainable development by facilitating multi-stakeholder discussions, actions and the dissemination of best practices.
UNU co-leads the HESI Action Group on the Futures of Higher Education and Artificial Intelligence, which aims to establish a transdisciplinary collaborative platform for building a knowledge base on current trends, opportunities and risks that AI poses to higher education through the lens of sustainable development. Under this action group, the podcast AI and Sustainability was launched by UNU, which explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), higher education and sustainability. Featuring insights from leading experts and practitioners, the podcast aims to advance the global conversation on the ethics, opportunities and disruptions that AI brings to education, and its role in achieving the SDGs. The action group also organizes the AI Learning Lab series of webinars on AI in higher education.
HESI is a partnership between several UN entities and the higher education community, currently chaired by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), UNU, UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) and the Sulitest Association
