UNU-IAS Director Discusses Coral Reef Protection in SDGs Column

Prof. Shinobu Yume Yamaguchi discussed the impacts of rising seawater temperatures, ocean acidification and solutions to protect coral reefs.

On 18 July 2026, Tokyo Shimbun, a leading newspaper in Japan, published a column by Shinobu Yume Yamaguchi (Director, UNU-IAS) focusing on the impact of rising seawater temperatures and ocean acidification on marine ecosystems and coral reefs.

The column, Progress on the SDGs — Insights from the UN, features one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) every month and is written by directors of UN agencies and offices in Japan. The July issue addresses goal 14 (life below water).  

In the column Prof. Yamaguchi highlights the importance of blue finance and expanding international cooperation for the protection of the marine environment.
