During 5–15 July 2022, UNU-IAS will be contributing to the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The HLPF is the core UN platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNU-IAS is organising two side events to advance discussions on synergies and trade-offs between climate action and the SDGs, and ecosystem restoration to build back better from COVID-19.

Climate Action and the SDGs — Closing Gaps and Strengthening Synergies

This online side event will identify gaps and needs in knowledge about synergies and trade-offs between climate change and sustainable development. It will explore ways forward in closing these gaps, including research on transformations in energy, food, urban, and other related socio-economic systems. Participants will share examples of synergies, trade-offs, and good practices. The event will discuss options for systemic approaches to transform these systems for sustainability at the local, national, and global scales, enhancing synergies between climate action and other SDGs.
Working Together for Everyone’s Well-being: The Satoyama Initiative and Building Back Better

This online side event will highlight the role of the Satoyama Initiative in achieving the SDGs and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. It will explore the role of local action and partnerships in landscape and seascape approaches to ecosystem restoration, promoting the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development in an inclusive and effective manner. The event will feature voices from both high-level experts and in-the-field practitioners to amplify their diverse knowledge and experiences, particularly on the role of socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) in building back better from COVID-19.
