G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI) and United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) are jointly hosting a 4-day workshop providing a comprehensive overview of post-mining land restoration, including essential topics, practical techniques, and real-world examples. The workshop, scheduled for April 15-18, 2024, in Dresden, Germany, features both classroom sessions (2 days) and field trips (2 days), offering a participatory and interactive experience. Experts from Germany and internationally will share insights ranging from soil science to mining engineering, water management, and societal change.
Participants will explore diverse case studies, covering open-cast and underground mines, with solutions including revegetation, flooding, stabilization for renewable energy production, and remediation for risk reduction. The site tours will highlight the restoration of virgin ecosystems while addressing the delicate balance between ecosystem services and socioeconomic development.
Limited funding is available from GLI to support participants interested in this mining restoration workshop. To be considered for funding, please complete the relevant questions below. The application deadline is February 20, 2024, and space is limited, so early applications are encouraged.
