UNU-FLORES Hosts Supervisors of 32 Doctoral Researchers on the NEXtra Doctoral Programme

UNU-FLORES leadership shared important updates with doctoral supervisors in a comprehensive briefing and discussion session.

UNU-FLORES hosted the supervisors of the 32 doctoral researchers on the UNU-FLORES NEXtra Doctoral Programme at its offices in the Dresden World Trade Centre. The aim was to update them on latest developments within the UNU and the institute, and to thank them for their commitment to the doctoral candidates.

In welcoming the doctoral supervisors, UNU-FLORES Director, Professor Edeltraud Guenther, noted that “2025 will usher in a new UNU strategy in which knowledge is a key tenet. As UNU will be celebrating it is 50th anniversary, I encourage you to ask yourself for your personal vision for 2025”.

Prof Daniel Karthe invited them to the Dresden Nexus Conference in April 2025, which will further advance the Resource Nexus approach with the conference theme, “The Future of Resources – Resources for the Future”.

According to Professor Coetzee, who leads the Resource Nexus Programme in Education at UNU-FLORES, “Our Doctoral Programme is enriched by the contributions of participating supervisors from diverse backgrounds, whose research expertise brings multiple perspectives to the integrated and sustainable management of resources, facilitating a truly interdisciplinary Resource Nexus approach."

Each doctoral researcher is co-supervised by two supervisors, one from UNU-FLORES and the other one from the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) and/or the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), key partners in the NEXtra Doctoral Programme.

Five points about the NEXtra Doctoral Programme:
  • 32 doctoral researchers
  • 50% women
  • Over 90% from the Global South
  • Each research project is closely aligned with the Resource Nexus approach.
  • Each project is contributing to achieving the SDGs
