Prof. Karthe Steps into Deputy Director Position

UNU-FLORES welcomes Prof. Daniel Karthe to its senior leadership team

Prof. Daniel Karthe has been appointed to the role of Deputy Director effective 1 December 2025.  

“As UNU-FLORES grows in scope, Professor Karthe brings a combination of scientific knowledge, management experience and global perspective to this role” notes Prof. Edeltraud Guenther, Director of UNU-FLORES.

Prof. Karthe  is senior sustainability scientist and environmental geographer with a distinguished career spanning over 25 years at research and higher education institutions in Germany at abroad. He recently headed UNU-FLORES’s research programme on the ‘Resource Nexus for Sustainability Transformations” (NEXtra)’.  Prof. Karthe  is an internationally recognized expert in the integrated assessment and management of environmental resources. He is experienced in leading complex, interdisciplinary projects that sit at the intersection of environmental science, engineering, and policy, including collaboration across the UN system. Since joining UNU-FLORES, the conceptual and operational advancement of the Resource Nexus has evolved as his key research interest.  


Prof. Karthe holds an Honorary Professorship in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at Dresden University of Technology (TUD) and serves as the focal point for the UNU Hub on Climate Resilience and Sustainable Technologies (CREST) at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of TUD. Prior to joining UNU-FLORES, Prof Karthe served as an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering and Vice Rector for Research at the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT), in Nalaikh, Mongolia and as a scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Magdeburg, Germany.
