World Water Week 2022 will take place from 23 August to 1 September as a hybrid virtual/on-site event in Stockholm, Sweden. This online and on-site World Water Week event, "Water Insecurity and Syndemic Health Issues Among Forcibly Displaced Persons", will take place on 30 August from 09:00–10:30 (CEST, UTC+2).
Water insecurity and its social and health impacts are understudied among forcibly displaced youth. This session will explore multi-method data from refugee youth living in rural and urban Uganda — Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest refugee hosting nation. Applying resource scarcity and syndemics frameworks the event will share new youth-centred research directions for humanitarian contexts to highlight the pathways from water insecurity to sexual and gender-based violence, mental health challenges, and poorer sexual health.
The event will provide data findings across studies as well as methodological approaches for generating new insight into the syndemic of interacting social and health disparities linked with water insecurity. Examples include urban refugees in Kampala, and refugees in a rural refugee settlement, where in both contexts young refugees disproportionately experience poverty and restricted access to basic resources, which can potentially put them at greater risk of stress and poor health outcomes.
