The objective of the project is to develop a position paper that should attempt to provide a suitable definition for smart cities in South Africa, consider how they might go about defining and developing effective smart city strategies that respond to their context and the developmental challenges facing South Africa, and the relevant plans or framework for implementation.

Activities

  • Develop a working definition for the South African smart city context.

  • Consider the institutional environment in which innovation takes place and the role that government can and should play in smart city development.

  • Map what is currently being done within the South African smart city space, and how to build coherence around the smart city agenda.

  • Conclude with concrete suggestions on how cities may go about developing their respective smart city agendas and action plans, including what resources and support may be needed from various actors and stakeholders.
