Announcement

Next Course: “Flow Cytometry from Conventional to Full Spectrum”, November 2023

We are glad to announce the course “Flow Cytometry from Conventional to Full Spectrum”.

We are glad to announce the course Flow Cytometry from Conventional to Full Spectrum”. This course is coordinated by Dr Mariela Bollati-Fogolín, PhD, Head of Cell Biology Unit, Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, Uruguay, from November 6th to 10th, 2023.

Seven Speakers from different Universities and Institutions —Argentina, France, Spain and the United States — will join the line-up of this course:

  • Dr. Zosia Maciorowski, International Society of Advanced cytometry.
  • Dr. Roxana Del Río-Guerra, Univesity of Vermont.
  • Dr. Florencia Quiroga, Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas en Retrovirus y SIDA.
  • Dr. Lola Martínez, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas.
  • Dr. William Telford, National Cancer Institute.
  • Dr. Sophie Novault, Institut Pasteur Paris.
  • Dr. Maria Jaimes, Cytek Biosciences.

This course aims to build regional capacity in flow cytometry (FC), covering all aspects of this powerful technique, from experimental designs to data acquisition, analysis & its applications in emerging and neglected diseases.

On one hand, this course proposes to review and consolidate the basic concepts and applications of the conventional FC and, on the other hand, to extend the knowledge and training of HR in the newly developed full spectrum FC. This latest technological advance adds value to the conventional FC since it reduces reagents’ use while generating a large and multidimensional data set, which can be applied in different biomedical research fields.

The training course will last 5 days, and it will be organized into 3 main activities: theoretical lectures (from basic FC to full spectrum FC and advanced applications), data analysis using different software (tutorial-style classroom, computer-based exercises, based on one computer per student) and FC practical activities (experimental design, controls, FC settings, and acquisition).

The training is oriented to participants with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medical Doctor, and related areas doing their Master, PhD thesis, or similar. They must have basic theory knowledge and be directly involved or, shortly, in the FC field. Applicants from around the globe will be welcome, although candidates from Latin American and Caribbean regions will have priority during the selection.

Each participant will receive extensive lecture notes and laboratory handout materials and protocols. The lab sessions will be hands-on, with plenty of time and opportunity for interaction with the instructors. One essential feature of the course is the unique combination of practical, laboratory-based work with both taught and tutorial-style classroom sessions, with most of the time spent on the flow instruments and analyzing flow data using different software.

The main aims of the course are to:

  1. introduce young scientists or technicians to the conventional and full spectrum FC by combining practical work with tutorial-style classroom sessions and top-quality lectures.
  2. train the participants in sample preparation, instrument features, setups/operation, and data collection.
  3. provide knowledge on strategies for exploiting data analysis with the available software.
  4. bring together renowned lecturers and young participants to discuss routine problems and the generation of innovative solutions in this specialized area.

The open call is open to anyone interested.
