Be ready for UNU-BIOLAC's open calls

Some requirements are better prepared in advance for a successful application

The UNU-BIOLAC academic activities program allows professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean to undertake short fellowships or cutting-edge training courses in academic institutions outside their country. During these training activities, they can carry out a part of their research work that requires the capabilities found in the host laboratory or train in an area of particular interest to develop their skills.

Traditionally, there are two open calls annually, each lasting about a month. However, some of the application requirements usually need prior preparation. Here are some recommendations to develop during the period between calls:

Fellows:

  • The week-by-week work plan during the internship must be well-defined at the time of application.
  • You must have a local supervisor and a hosting supervisor. Both must be aware of and agree with your work plan at the time of application.
  • You must know your migratory requirements and limitations for the country you plan to go to.
  • To ensure the smooth processing of fellowship funds, each applicant must have a valid bank account in their name that can receive wire transfers from abroad. If an applicant does not have such an account, they can alternatively receive the funds in local currency from the nearest UNDP office in the hosting country. Refer to the application information page for more details.
  • An optional bench fee can be paid to the host institution, so we recommend that the team responsible for its financial administration know of your application and clarify their ability to receive such payment (Bench fees can only be paid via international wire).

Courses:

  • The course's academic program must be fully defined at the time of application, including dates, facilities, participant selection mechanism, class contents, faculty,  and a detailed estimated budget. The involved parties must be aware of the application and should have given at least an informal consent.
  • The disbursement is made to an institutional account of the institution managing the funds for the course. To ensure the smooth processing of course funds, each applicant must specify a valid bank account in the name of the receiving institution that can receive international wire transfers. Refer to the application information page for more details.
