Integrated Assessment of Water Resources and Aquatic Ecosystem

The next joint Nexus Seminar Series will feature Prof. Daniel Karthe, Head of UNU-FLORES Nexus Research Programme.

The Kharaa River Basin (KRB) in Northern Mongolia is a region characterised by a rapid socioeconomic transition and data scarcity. For more than a decade, the project Integrated Water Resources Management: Model Region Mongolia (IWRM MoMo) investigated the scientific prerequisites for a holistic approach of managing water resources in that region. The project focused on the development and implementation of an integrated water resources management model — which which by the definition of Global Water Partnership considers water in the context of land and related resources, economic and social welfare, and vital ecosystems.

The resource nexus recently made popular resembles the integrated water resources management concept in many ways, but with a wider focus and the concurrent consideration of several nexus elements and their linkages. Referring to specific example of integrated water resources management implementation in the KRB, this seminar lecture covers the potential synergies and trade-offs between water management and the alternative prioritisation of land management, mineral resources exploitation, and food production in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals).

This event — "Integrated Assessment of Water Resources and Aquatic Ecosystems: How Do they Relate to Resource Nexus Perspectives towards the SDGs?" — is part of the UNU-FLORES & TU Dresden joint Nexus Seminar Series. It will be held online on 14 December starting from 14:50 (CEST).

The feature lecturer will be Prof. Daniel Karthe, Head of UNU-FLORES Nexus Research Programme.
