The building sector accounts for more than one-third of global energy use and nearly 40% of carbon emissions, making it central to global efforts to achieve climate neutrality. Advancing Global Research for Sustainable Buildings (AdvancRes4SusBuild) aims to strengthen international research collaboration and accelerate the transition to sustainable, resilient, and near-zero-emission buildings worldwide.
The project supports global efforts to decarbonize the building sector by strengthening research cooperation, identifying key knowledge gaps, and promoting scalable, science-based solutions. It contributes to international initiatives under the Buildings Breakthrough and works in coordination with the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme.
Using a Nexus approach that considers energy use, materials, climate resilience, and resource efficiency together, the project facilitates knowledge exchange across regions and disciplines. In Germany, it aligns with national priorities on climate-neutral and resource-efficient construction and connects with the emerging Bundesforschungszentrum für klimaneutrales und ressourceneffizientes Bauen (BFZ), translated as the Federal Research Centre for Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Buildings. Key activities include mapping global research priorities, establishing an inclusive international research network, and strengthening links with existing research platforms and initiatives.
The project contributes directly to the UNU Resource Nexus focus area Sustainable Buildings and Construction and receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).
