Smart Sustainable Cities And Communities For People: A Pathway To A Resilient Future
Rapid urbanization in the 21st century demands innovative solutions to address social equity, environmental sustainability, and efficient resource management. Smart Sustainable Cities and Communities (SSCCs) have emerged as a promising paradigm integrating advanced technologies, data-driven governance, and citizen engagement to create inclusive, resilient, and livable urban environments. This study examines the role of technology in facilitating the transition toward SSCCs and its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using an extensive literature review and quantitative research, this paper identifies technological enablers—such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT)—as catalysts for improving resource efficiency, waste management, environmental protection, and service delivery. Particular attention is given to SDGs related to good health and well-being, quality education, decent work and economic growth, climate action, and affordable clean energy. The findings indicate that technology significantly contributes to smart city development and supports SDG achievement. Future research should examine stakeholder roles—including government, industry, academia, and policy institutions—and explore additional SDGs such as poverty reduction, gender equality, and clean water and sanitation. The study concludes that technology plays a transformative role in advancing sustainable development through smart sustainable cities.
