About the programme
The Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) is a capacity-building programme offered by UNU-MERIT since 2013. This programme is designed for government officials and policy makers working in migration and asylum. This full-time three-month programme uses various teaching and evaluation methods, including lectures, interactive sessions, and hands-on practical exercises, with a special focus on Problem-Based Learning (PBL).
The MMDP aims to develop theoretical knowledge on migration management and practical skills such as articulation and presentation. Overall, the course equips participants with new skills and insights, offering practical, interactive experiences to apply the latest knowledge in migration management.
Moreover, MMDP provides a platform for networking through field trips across Europe. These include tours of Dutch Ministries in The Hague, EU institutions in Brussels, and the UN and other intergovernmental agencies in Geneva. This experience offers participants insights into national, regional, and international perspectives on migration management.
Structure of the Programme:
The MMDP is structured around three key courses:
- Introduction to Migration Studies
- Migration and Development
- Migration Policy
Each course lasts four weeks and covers a range of modules related to the course topic, including for example:
- Migration Data
- International Migration Law
- Labour Migration
- Diaspora Engagement
- Policy Coherence
- Global Migration Governance
- Migration Scenario Building
Participants are expected to commit 40 hours per week, which includes both contact hours and self-preparation. The programme emphasizes interactive exercises and practical workshops to ensure a high-quality learning experience.
Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) 2027: Call for Applications Opening Soon
The MMDP 2027 cohort will run from 5 April 2027 until 24 June 2027 in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
The call for scholarships is now open. Applications from government officials and civil servants working in migration management are being accepted. The scholarship will cover all expenses for the duration of the training, including flights, accommodation, visa fees, meals, daily living expenses, health insurance, and field trip costs.

The MMDP is a capacity-building programme funded by the European Union (EU) through the Migration Partnership Facility (MPF) of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). The programme is addressed to government officials and civil servants who work in migration management in the EU Southern Neighbourhood, the Silk Route, Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asian countries*.
