The course aims at providing an introduction to the main theoretical and empirical issues surrounding the economic analysis of innovation. In particular, the course will discuss how innovation emerges in modern economies and how it interacts with the dynamics and evolution of sectors. The course will examine alternative ways of conceptualizing innovation; the sources and procedures of innovation; the relationship between market structure and innovation; the trade-offs and dilemmas in terms of strategy and social welfare which characterize innovative environments. This course is an introductory course to students with a limited background in the innovation studies tradition. It uses simple microeconomic and industrial organization models as well as empirical and historical evidence on the evolution of industries and case studies.

This course is an introductory course to students with a limited background in the innovation studies tradition. It uses macroeconomic models as well as empirical and historical evidence on the evolution of industries. The case studies cover examples of adoption of innovations related to communication technologies, and assignments are tailored to the ITU audience.

Causes and consequences of the digital divide
This course introduces participants to the challenges of digital inclusion, the consequences of digital divides, and the opportunities towards inclusive and equitable digital transformation. The modules focus on digital inclusion, evaluation, and approaches to understanding ICTs and their relationship with development and governance in a changing technology landscape.

Cost: Free of charge for selected participants (thanks to the generous support of the Global Gateway EU initiative)
Targeted participant profiles: policy-makers, government officials and other relevant civil servants from national and regional administrations, officials from international organisations, entrepreneurs, professionals in relevant sectors, representatives of civil society organisations, universities, research centres, and think-tanks. Government officials and policymakers from developing countries, particularly women, are encouraged to apply.

UNU-MERIT is an ITU Academy Training Centre, as part of the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU’s) Academy Training Centre programme.
