Design and Evaluation of Public Policies (DEPP)

Following the successful formula of the DEIP workshops, UNU-MERIT offers workshops around a policy field or focus identified by Low and Middle-Income Country policymakers. Examples of focus are the Comprehensive Innovation for Sustainable Development Policy; the Theory and Practice Social Protection Policy, Governance and Public Administration Reform Policy; or the Migration and Reintegration Policy. But we are happy to discuss DEPP workshop suggestions with a proposed policy focus – as long as the request matches the expertise of UNU-MERIT.

The DEPP workshops are always designed and implemented jointly with local counterparts. Based on the policy issue they identify, we organise a workshop – ranging from 3-5 workdays – including theoretical information sessions, policy discussions, interactive sessions with local stakeholders, and communication and engagement activities. Workshops take place at the location of the organising country, in Maastricht, or they can follow a hybrid setting.

The workshops target senior and middle-level officials of Ministries (of Development, Internal Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Social Affairs, and Migration) and other supporting institutions, as well as representatives from the private sector involved in these focus areas.

Professional Training Course on Inequality in Southern Africa and Brussels – 2019

This training aims to assess inequalities and place it in broader global contexts. To discuss and strengthen effective current policy directions and additional solutions. To enhance cross-sectoral and cross-country support and practical approaches for reducing inequalities. On-site in Johannesburg and in Brussels.

The tailor-made Training Course on Inequality has been organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in collaboration with UNU-MERIT. The course in Johannesburg, South Africa, took place from 25th to 29th November 2019 and in Brussels from 24 to 28 June 2019 and was hosted at the GIZ Representation Brussels. The training combined traditional lectures, knowledge-sharing sessions and open discussions among participants. Moreover, the training course provided participants with best practice examples of policy measures that can contribute to reducing inequality within countries. Inequality was analysed in its multiple dimensions, such as economic, cultural, political, and ethnic dimensions.
