A2JKids: Rights Awareness and Participatory Methods

About the course

This online course provides students with a conceptual overview of access to justice for children and the importance of rights awareness, children’s rights and policy initiatives to ensure that children understand and exercise their rights. 

By the end of the course, students will deliver the design of a policy awareness campaign to inform children about their rights and the resources available.

Structure of the course

Week 1

  • Monday
    • 2-hour live online lecture on access to justice for children and rights awareness (an overview of different initiatives implemented to make the law understood by children)
    • Task: students grouped by countries, research on how their countries address access to justice for children and the different rights awareness campaigns, and prepare a 15’ presentation.
  • Thursday  
    • 2-hour live tutorial: students present their results.  

 

Week 2

  • Monday
    • 2-hour live online lecture on participatory methods and ethic review process
    • Task: Students prepare a research design using participatory methods to understand what would be an effective awareness campaign for children to understand their right to access to justice.  Students prepare a 15’ presentation with their research design.

 

Week 3

  • Monday
    • 3-hour live tutorial for students to present their research design and receive feedback from peers and tutor.  
    • Task: With the feedback, students refine their research design, and set up a timeline to undertake the research.  

 

Week 4

  • 30’ group consultation hour

 

Week 4-5

  • Each sub-group undertakes fieldwork (working together with a school)

 

Week 6

  • Wednesday
    • 4-hour live lecture. Each group presents the awareness campaign and receives feedback. We will try to invite experts to this session to provide feedback on the design.  
    • Based on the results, we will consider sharing the campaign with relevant stakeholders for their use. 

 

Note: Students who participate in this training will have to cover the cost of the fieldwork activity (that is to say, transportation to the location and snacks).
