Zakaria is an external doctoral research fellow in migration studies.
Zakaria (Zak) AL SHMALY is a Syrian researcher interested in migration and foreign policy. He worked in Europe and the Middle East with humanitarian and international organisations such as the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO), Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP). He also was a Dahrendorf Fellow at Oxford University - St. Antony’s College, and a Bucerius PhD Fellow at the Zeit Stiftung. Zak is currently an external doctoral fellow in migration studies at UNU-MERIT, with research focused on the political participation of migrants in Europe.
