The UN Brief: An Interview with Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala

Prof. Marwala joined Maya Plentz to discuss the importance of global data equality and technology access in the context of this year's UN initiatives.

The UN Brief interviewed UNU Rector Tshilidzi Marwala to discuss the year ahead and how UNU is contributing to the Summit of the Future and the Global Digital Compact.

"We are witnessing the fragmentation of the world, where on one hand you have countries that are data-rich and on the other hand you have countries that are data-poor, with very serious consequences for the well-being of people in those [data-poor] countries."

The interview also touched on how data governance and artificial intelligence could boost rural education in sub-Saharan Africa.

"One of the issues that afflicts people in rural areas is a shortage of well-trained teachers. How do we ensure the students in those areas have access to world-class teaching...and digital platforms?"
