Background

TICAD is an international conference to discuss the development of Africa. The conference was launched in 1993 upon proposal by the Government of Japan, and is co-hosted by the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission (AUC). The ninth conference will take place in Yokohama, Japan. For more information, please visit the TICAD website.

GLTP, which has been implemented by UNU-IAS since 2013, is a training scheme sponsored by MEXT. It aims to develop future leaders that can contribute to solving the diverse challenges faced by Africa in achieving the SDGs. It promotes inter-disciplinary, community-based and collaborative research approaches to leadership and sustainable development in Africa.

GLTP has engaged participants from across Africa and the world, in many different disciplines, to learn from African leaders about innovation, democracy, civic engagement and public policy. Originally comprising field-based studies at universities and research institutions in Africa, the programme was redesigned in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as an online intensive course. This expanded its reach and incorporated lectures, workshops and activities delivered by African scholars and practitioners. GLTP participants explore approaches to strengthen democratic governance, improve civil society engagement in research, and build and enhance human rights and inter-cultural understanding.
