Morshed Mannan is a UNU/GSPI Visiting Science-Policy Fellow on Data Governance at at the Geneva Office of the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research.
His research focuses on democratic community-led governance in the digital economy, with a particular focus on platform cooperatives, data cooperatives, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
Morshed Mannan is a Lecturer in Global Law and Digital Technology at Edinburgh Law School, University of Edinburgh. He was previously a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, where he was part of the ‘BlockchainGov’ ERC project. In addition to his recent co-authored book Blockchain Governance (MIT Press), his research has been published in several leading journals, including Regulation & Governance, Information, Communication & Society, New Technology Work and Employment, Policy & Society, Technology in Society, and the George Washington Law Review.
He has acted as a consultant for the International Cooperative Alliance and NCBA Clusa International, and as an expert for the BRAC Centre for Peace and Justice, the Scottish Parliament, the European Commission, the OECD, UNIDROIT, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the Dhaka Ride-Sharing Drivers’ Union. He is currently a Member of the UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD Working Group of Experts on a Project on Collaborative Legal Structures for Agricultural Enterprises.
Before moving into academia, Mannan worked as a lawyer in Bangladesh. He holds a PhD in Law from Leiden University, a LLM (Adv.) in International Civil and Commercial Law (cum laude) from Leiden University, and a LLB (Hons.) from the University of Warwick. He has been enrolled as an Advocate by the Bangladesh Bar Council, and was called to the Bar of England & Wales.
