This training course on drug discovery and development aims to illustrate the necessary tools and resources for navigating the journey from identifying small bioactive molecules to defining a candidate for future clinical studies, progressing step by step through the required preclinical stages.
Content summary:
The activity starts with an introductory talk on the drug discovery and development process, subsequently delving into available strategies for selecting a molecular target.
We will explore tools for in silico studies, facilitating screening and optimization of hits when the molecular target is known, and delve into proteomic tools that aid in identifying potential molecular targets.
The course then progresses to discussing cellular models, allowing us to investigate both the activity and selectivity of the molecule(s) under study.
Continuing with the line of work to determine if a new bioactive compound could be transformed into a new drug, we shift our focus to tools that are available and accessible in third-world countries for preclinical studies of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics/bioavailability, encompassing both in vitro and in silico approaches.
Finally, we will explore the tools that animal models provide us to study the safety of new bioactive compounds and their efficacy. To achieve this, we will rely on theoretical lectures covering various topics, as well as specific practical sessions with experts in the field. These experts will share various tips, to offer strategies for applying accessible tools for our region
There will be four types of activities:
1-Plenary lectures or workshops on representative topics.
2-Laboratory Sessions - Wet laboratory.
3-Laboratory Sessions - Dry/Computational laboratory.
4-The event will conclude with 2-3 hours allocated for a round table discussion with all participants, presenting and discussing applied scientific work through seminars and short talks.
The target audience includes postgraduates, PhD candidates, and technicians involved in the field of Drug Discovery and Development.
