Prof. Daniel Karthe Assumes Role as Director of UNU Resource Nexus

Environmental scientist and former Deputy Director takes the helm of UNU Resource Nexus, succeeding Prof. Edeltraud Guenther.

Dresden, Germany, 1 September 2026 – Prof. Dr. Daniel Karthe has begun his tenure as Director of UNU Resource Nexus, succeeding Prof. Dr. Edeltraud Guenther. Previously serving as the institute's Deputy Director, Prof. Dr. Karthe brings extensive leadership experience and deep familiarity with the institute's mission, programmes and international partnerships.

An environmental scientist by training, Prof. Dr. Karthe has comprehensive experience in water resources management, environmental assessment, ecosystem protection, and sustainability science. His work has focused on applying the Resource Nexus approach to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen resilience in diverse social and environmental contexts.

Throughout his career, he has led and contributed to interdisciplinary research, higher education, and capacity-building initiatives across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, collaborating with universities and research institutions, the UN system and its member states, the private sector and civil society partners.

As Director of UNU Resource Nexus, he is committed to further advance the Resource Nexus approach, strengthening the science-policy interface, fostering international partnerships, and developing innovative solutions that help societies manage environmental resources sustainably.

Under his leadership, UNU Resource Nexus will continue to support research, education and policy engagement that contribute to sustainable development and resilience in an increasingly interconnected world.
