UNU and ICEED Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Under the new agreement, UNU and ICEED will collaborate on programmes and projects that promote policy and practice-relevant research.

On 29 November 2024, the United Nations University and the International Council on Environmental Economics and Development (ICEED) signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on strengthening cooperation on programmes and projects that promote policy and practice-relevant research impacting the work of ICEED and the United Nations at national, regional and global levels, especially in the fields of technology, innovation and sustainable development.

The new MoU aligns the expertise of ICEED and UNU to develop a range of educational and research activities such as capacity-building opportunities, knowledge-exchange events, academic programmes, fellowships and a potential UNU liason office co-shared by UNU and ICEED.

Speaking at the signing, UNU Rector Tshilidzi Marwala remarked: "This is about taking the values of the United Nations to the broader community, so that we can solve problems around the issues that really matter such as climate change, peace and security, and new technologies that are changing the very essence of who we are as human beings. I am absolutely delighted and enthusiastic about this new collaboration."

Commenting on the new agreement, Mr. Ken Kitatani, Chief of Executive Board and Committee of ICEED said: "We are looking forward to working directly with the United Nations University in producing solutions for environment and society, so that we can realize the world that the UN has always aspired to."
