About the Course
Co-produced by the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) through its Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity and Social Determinants of Health in India, the School of Public Health (SoPH) at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa and ADBI, this course is designed to drive the advancement of gender integration within health programs, systems, and policies.
The health system serves as a crucial area and opportunity for addressing gender inequalities, yet programs and policies often inadvertently perpetuate discrimination against women, girls, and marginalized groups. In response to the imperative to invest in women, understanding where and how to invest becomes paramount for fostering gender-equitable health programs and policies.
This course delves into the essence of gender integration in health—what it entails, why it holds significance, and provides an in-depth exploration of three distinct programs in Nepal, the Philippines, and India. These programs serve as compelling examples where gender integration has been successfully woven into government health initiatives at scale, ensuring sustainability.
By examining these real-world cases, the course not only imparts valuable insights but also offers transferable lessons applicable to policymakers, donors/funders, and those involved in designing and implementing health programs. The goal is to equip stakeholders with the knowledge needed to facilitate more effective gender integration, thereby advancing both gender equality and health equity.
The course consists of 4 units:
- Unit 1: Understanding gender integration in health programs and policies (15 minutes)
- Unit 2: Integrating Gender in Tertiary Care—Promising Practices from the Philippines (8 minutes)
- Unit 3: Integrating Gender in Medical Education—Promising Practices from Maharashtra, India (19 minutes)
- Unit 4: Integrating Gender at the Policy Level—Promising Practices from Nepal (13 minutes)
