Alexey is an expert in resource-effective management of transformed mining and urban landscapes.
Alexey, an environmental scientist, holds a double doctoral degree in geo-engineering from two of the world’s oldest institutes of resources, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and St. Petersburg Mining University. As a geochemist, he has over 15 years of experience in topics ranging from pollution monitoring to the assessment and restoration of human-altered ecosystems. He is skilled in managing environmental and resource projects for industries extracting coal, metals, diamonds, and building materials. Alexey has conducted both field and desktop research on environmental resources affected by mining in Colombia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Mozambique, Russia, South Africa, and Tajikistan. He has contributed to knowledge sharing by organising Master’s programs, summer schools, training workshops, and case competitions.
At UNU Resource Nexus, he served as an Adjunct Professor from 2021 to 2024, and since 2024 has headed the Institute's branch in Weisswasser, where he established the REPOINT Laboratory (Resource Nexus for Post-mining Inclusive Transition). Alexey currently focuses on resource-effective management of transformed landscapes, from mining sites to urban areas. His research centers on soils as a critical node mediating the interconnections between water, air, biota, and broader landscape systems.
